NZ navy ship sinks, oil smell fills village air
New Zealand naval ship HMNZS Manawanui has sunk into the ocean, disappearing off the coast of Siumu where it ran aground on Saturday night after hitting a reef.
On Sunday morning, Samoa Observer visited Siumu and Sa'anapu, where locals are grappling with the strong, pervasive odour of oil leaking from the sunken ship.
Despite the environmental concerns, the residents expressed deep gratitude for the tireless efforts of the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services and the Samoa Police Rescue Team.
