Samoa Stationery and Books Samoa will conclude its annual literacy week celebration today with a book fair. 

The celebration of literacy started on Monday and this year's theme is "Read to Succeed". 

SSAB continuously advocates for literacy as it was one of the main reasons it was established and also it is SSAB CEO and President, Tofilau Fiti Leung Wai's passion to promote literacy. 

According to Tofilau, having to children of Samoa be well-educated and well-equipped in reading is one of SSAB's goal. 

"I believe that if a kid has a strong background in terms of reading, they’ll have the ability to understand every single subject at school," she said

There was a reading program for the children yesterday hosted by Miss Samoa, Fonoifafo McFarland Seumanu, which was one of the activities SSAB had planned for literacy week. 

"We distributed invitations to different schools. Whoever wanted to participate in terms of the reading today, they’re more than welcome to join," Tofilau added

One of the activities by SSAB for literacy week was having all their staff dress up in any book characters. It was seen in the SSAB Megastore how colourful the staff were in the variety of characters they dressed up as.

"The reason why we continue to do book characters is that it all goes back to books and we want to create a link between what we’re promoting which is literacy and what we do here at SSAB," Tofilau said

"If the kids see that what we promote and what we’re doing connects then we’re actually walking the talk.

"We dress up to celebrate and to promote literacy."

According to Tofilau, as part of the literacy celebration, SSAB had greatly slashed the prices for all educational materials and products as a way to motivate parents and children to come in and buy these educational reading materials.

"It’s not so much of the economic side of things because we want the sales or revenue coming in. No, it's not that," she said

"It’s just a matter of building the children’s passion for reading."

The Literacy Week celebration will conclude today with a book fair where people can buy books for as low as 20 cents. 

SSAB also has a literacy promotion that will continue on until the end of the month.
