Former Chief Justice, Patu Tiava’asue Falefatu Sapolu, has joined the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) as a part time Lecturer. 

Patu joined the university on the commencement of the current academic year as a Lecturer for Customary Law Adjudication. 

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Peseta Desmond Lee Hang, confirmed the former Chief Justice being part of the university on a part time basis. 

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Peseta said the university had approached Patu following his retirement for his assistance in educating students at the university. 

“Securing his service is a big scoop and an asset to the university,” said the Deputy Vice Chancellor. 

“His wealth of knowledge and experience in the legal field is a big advantage for N.U.S. and we are grateful that he decided to join us to share his wisdom to our students.” 

Peseta added that another benefit of having the former Chief Justice is that it has made it attractive for students to take up the paper. 

The Certificate in Customary Law Adjudication has four papers offered for the year. 

Patu had served as the head of Judiciary for 26 years and nine months before he exited the judiciary in April last year. 

He was a prosecutor at the Attorney General’s office in 1976 and had long working relationship with the police force that goes back some 43 years ago. 

Former Prime Minister, Tofilau Eti Alesana, appointed Patu as Chief Justice in 1992.
