400 police officers for Independence security
Close to 400 police officers will be on duty during the Independence Day celebrations to ensure safety and security during the events.
Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga said 400 police officers will be deployed across all events, with the national fire and emergency service also on standby. He said the security threat level is low and there are no known risks to the program.
“We have enough officers on duty and emergency services ready in case of any incidents,” he said.
Samoa’s Independence executive committee provided details during a livestreamed briefing on the government’s official page with journalists on Wednesday, outlining the program for Independence Week events.
The briefing was led by representatives Agafili Tomaimanō Shem Leo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga, and Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority Commissioner Tanuvasa Petone Mauga.
The program begins Friday, 29 May, at 8:30 am with an official ceremony to launch the Independence Games and events, including kirikiti Samoa, fautasi (longboat) racing, and other sporting activities.
Saturday’s program will feature the opening of the taalolo cultural presentations for the new Legislative Assembly building. Twelve taalolo will be presented, with six from Savai‘i and six from Upolu.
On Sunday, 31 May, a national thanksgiving church service will be held at Tupulaga Hall in Sogi.
On Monday, 1 June, marching events will begin in front of the Tusitala Hotel, followed by an official ceremony opening the new Legislative Assembly Office Building at 9 am. Cultural performances will begin at 1:30 pm.
A performance of the Tongan brass band ands and two local brass bands will be featured.
A large group of international guests is expected, including leaders from Tokelau, the University of the South Pacific, American Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, and the Governor-General of Australia.
Later Monday, six fautasi longboats will compete in races starting at 4 pm. Racing will continue on Wednesday at 7 am.
On Tuesday, 2 June, eight paopao canoe crews will compete in two heats before a final race. After the canoe event, the Mau Office in Vaimoso will be officially opened at 8 am.
A floral tribute will be held at 11 am. to honour Samoa’s independence since 1962.
