Acting Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioo officially announced the theme and logo for Samoa's 64th Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.
The government has budgeted $5 million for the three-day event, which begins on 29 May and ends on 1 June.
The theme for the 2026 celebrations is Samoa ua tasi mo se amataga fou, or Samoa is united for a new beginning. The first announcement was made by Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt in January this year.
Mulipola, in her official address, said the theme reflects the country’s resilience and shared vision for the future.
“This theme reminds us that unity is our strength,” she said. “The challenges we face today are complex and constantly changing, often shaped by forces beyond our control. Yet through faith, unity and solidarity we can overcome these challenges and move forward together with confidence and hope.”
A total of 11 submissions were received for the logo design competition before the entry deadline. The winning design was created by Jack Olaf Lafoai, 34, of Fatitu Saleimoa and Utualii, who was awarded $3,000. The acting prime minister thanked all participants, acknowledging the effort and creativity invested in the competition.
The logo incorporates traditional Samoan symbols, including the Samoan flag, tanoa, ipu tau ‘ava, to‘oto‘o, fue and Samoan patterns inside the numbers six and four representing Samoa’s heritage and identity.
“The winning logo reflects Samoa’s journey as a nation and highlights the pillars that uphold our democracy, our Christian faith and our culture and traditions,” Mulipola said. “The colours represent our national identity, while the designs decorating the number six and four showcase the creativity and technique of our people.”
Mulipola said that the theme, logo and associated designs are now the government's property; she added that any commercial use will require prior approval.
The announcement was made at the Samoa Tourism Authority’s (STA) fale Samoa in Apia, in the presence of Cabinet ministers, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the police force.
