More than an adventure for Falealili youths
When members of the Falealili Horizon Va‘a Club and the Aiga Fealofani Study Group decided to take a hike from the mouth of the Fagatoloa River in Salani to the base of the Sopoaga Falls, it was more than just a trekking adventure.
The groups described the experience as a display of faith, endurance, and appreciation for nature. The two groups commemorated Good Friday with a historic and deeply symbolic journey.
Covering an estimated distance of 12 to 16 kilometres, the journey tested both physical endurance and mental resilience. For all participants, it was a first-time experience, making this achievement even more meaningful.
“The hike was more than just a physical challenge. It served as a powerful act of reflection on the journey and sacrifice of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, during the Easter season. As they navigated the difficult path, the youth were reminded of the strength, perseverance, and faith required in their own spiritual journeys,” said Fuimaono Matautia Fuimaono of the Falealili Horizons Vaa Club, an organiser of the event.
“This event marks the first time a group of this generation has completed such a trek to Sopoaga Falls, setting a precedent for future youth initiatives that combine faith, culture, and environmental awareness.”
She added that one of the key objectives of the journey was to witness firsthand the breathtaking beauty of the natural world.
“Standing at the falls, surrounded by untouched landscape, participants expressed gratitude for the blessings prepared for all people. The experience also aimed to instil in the younger generation a deep love and respect for the environment.
“In a time when environmental challenges are among the world’s most pressing issues, such experiences are vital. By connecting young people directly with nature, these groups hope to nurture a sense of responsibility and stewardship that will carry into the future.
“Many have seen Sopoaga Falls, but very few have ever touched it. For these young participants, this was more than a hike. It was a journey of faith, discovery, and purpose, one they will never forget.”
