Concerns are rising over student behaviour at the National University of Samoa following a series of fights reported over the past few weeks, with new incidents again emerging this week.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show students, mainly girls, involved in physical altercations on and around campus. The clips have quickly gone viral, drawing widespread criticism and sparking debate about safety and discipline at the country’s leading tertiary institution.
Efforts to seek comment from the university have so far been unsuccessful. Emails sent to the National University of Samoa College regarding the incidents and growing public concern were not responded to as of publication.
Members of the public have expressed disappointment, saying such behaviour undermines the purpose of higher education. Some are calling for stronger enforcement of university rules and improved measures to address student conduct.
A student, who declined to be named, said tensions among peers have been noticeable in recent weeks. “It’s not a good look for the university. We come here to study, not to fight,” the student said.
Another student, Mele Taufete’e, said the viral videos reflect poorly on Samoa’s youth. “These are future leaders. They need to act responsibly, especially in a place of learning,” she said.
The university has previously taken a firm stance on violence, enforcing suspensions and disciplinary action against those involved in similar incidents. Past responses have emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to fighting.
The recent incidents have renewed calls for conflict resolution programs, counselling services and greater awareness to prevent further violence.
As the videos continue to circulate online, many are urging students to uphold values of respect and responsibility and to ensure the university remains a safe environment for learning.
