The British High Commission in Apia partnered with Falefitu Primary School to host a two-part education programme marking Commonwealth Day, culminating on Monday, March 9.

The programme began with a Commonwealth presentation during the school’s assembly on Friday and concluded with hands-on activities for students in Years 6 to 8 focused on teamwork, communication, leadership and problem-solving.

This year’s Commonwealth Day theme, “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth,” guided both the presentation and the practical sessions.

Students took part in team-based challenges designed to build creativity, planning, coordination and shared responsibility. Activities encouraged participants to think strategically, work cooperatively and take turns leading their teams.

Organisers said the programme aimed to help students develop skills that support their growth as future leaders while reflecting the Commonwealth’s shared values of development, democracy, peace, human rights, sustainability and cooperation.

During Friday’s assembly, students were introduced to the global reach of the Commonwealth of Nations. The organisation includes 56 member countries and around 2.7 billion people worldwide. More than 60 per cent of the Commonwealth’s population is under the age of 30, highlighting the important role young people play in its future.

The celebration at Falefitu Primary School formed part of these global activities and echoed a message from King Charles III that the Commonwealth can continue to serve as “a force for good” when its members work together in friendship and service to their communities.

Deputy High Commissioner Daniel Garlick said the event was a meaningful way to engage students in the values promoted by the Commonwealth.

“It was wonderful to celebrate Commonwealth Day 2026 with the students and staff of Falefitu Primary School,” Garlick said. “This year’s theme highlights the importance of unlocking opportunities together, and today’s activities showed how partnership can inspire and support young people.”

The High Commission also acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, school principal Taiali’i Pifolamalesuafa Maota, teachers and staff, as well as volunteers from Cruisers Sports Club who helped facilitate the activities.
