Families and students across Samoa lined up this week to receive the government’s $150 back to school support at various district offices, which was to help with school fees, uniforms, and basic school supplies.

People came in as early as 6 am and some as late as 6 pm. There were also lines at government offices as people looked for documents needed to receive the money.

Antonia Lafolafoga said she witnessed many people lining up at the Registrar of Births office in Mulinu’u to get their documents verified.

“They needed them to give to the Fonofa'avae for verification purposes before they could receive their $150 Back to School grant. It was a long line, but everyone seemed determined to make sure their documents were correct so they could get the $150. I even went there to redo my birth certificate so that I could bring it to the Fonofa'avae.”

Eighteen-year-old university student Tony Salatielu said he collected his grant on Monday and described it as a relief for him and his parents.

“When I went there with my parents, they said that I had to bring my birth certificate, or even an ID or a passport, for them to collect their information and to verify me. If my name on the birth certificate does not match the name of my father or mother in their birth certificate, then I can’t get mine. But receiving this $150 from the government really makes me feel happy, and I’m thankful. This could be really helpful for me to buy my course readers to use for my studies.”

Fauina Samuelu also praised the grant for easing household pressures. “I’m so happy about this grant! It really helps with the school fees for my children and eases some of the financial pressure at home. The line was long and crowded, but it was worth the wait. Seeing so many families here shows how much this support is needed.”

Jasmine Sakaria highlighted the practical benefits of the grant. “The $150 will go a long way in helping with my children’s school supplies and even some daily needs. I’m really grateful to the government for this support. People were so happy, and the crowd was huge from morning until late afternoon. It’s great to see the government helping families prepare for the new school year.”

Florence To’omata said the grant made a meaningful difference for families like hers. “This grant is such a relief for families like mine. It might seem small, but it makes a big difference in covering school fees and other necessities. Everyone I spoke to was so thankful and excited today. I hope this program continues every year, it really helps struggling families.”
