The American Corner at the Nelson Memorial Library in Apia was reopened on Monday by the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, to drive young people of Samoa to a life pursuing knowledge and learning more about the United States

Landau said the 250th anniversary of the United States is a big milestone. With the American Corner, Landau encourages people to learn more about America's Constitution and history and its relationship with Samoa.

"Knowing and learning more leads to greater prosperity and security, and I would like to reaffirm the longstanding ties between our countries," Landau said.

"This is the piece of US here in Apia," he added.

Later in the day, Landau signed an open skies agreement with Samoa and donated protective equipment to the Samoa Police.

In 2019, Samoa officially ended its open-skies relationship with the United States by withdrawing from the Multilateral Agreement on the Liberalisation of International Air Transportation (MALIAT), and the US removed Samoa from its applied Open Skies list, effective on 9 July, 2019.

Open Skies Agreements are international, liberalised aviation policies that remove government intervention in airline commercial decisions, allowing carriers from signatory countries to operate with fewer restrictions on routes, capacity, and pricing.

With the US bombing Iran over the weekend, Landau was asked by Samoa Observer how it would affect the Samoans living in the US, he said, "Sorry I'm only here to talk about Samoa, and I can't comment on that issue."
