Tuilaepa questions advertising of new roles
The Leader of the Opposition, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, is questioning whether recent top appointments made in the government had been advertised.
Tuilaepa made the comments during his weekly press conference, questioning whether the role of the Attorney General was advertised. Mauga Precious Chang was appointed as the AG after acting in the role following the departure of Sua Hellene Wallwork.
When announcing Mauga's appointment, Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa had stated that there were other applicants.
"He indeed said three lawyers applied for the position, but the question is, what time was this post advertised?" Tuilaepa said.
He claimed the position was not advertised.
He said there are processes set aside for all government appointments, and they have to be followed.
Another appointment Tuilaepa questioned was Maposua Tanya Toailoa joining the AG's Office.
He said no matter how long a person is working at a ministry or an organisation, she or he is considered an employee of that ministry or workplace.
"If Maposua will be at the AG for a short period of time, my question is whether a consultancy contract was tendered if it's for consultancy work?" he added.
An email sent to Maposua on how long she will be working for the Attorney General's Office remains unanswered.
The Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Nonu Saleimoa Vaai, was also contacted for a comment on this issue. An email sent to him also remains unanswered.
