Matautu Uta residents call for proper drainage

Residents in Matautu say a damaged drainage system continues to cause flooding in the area, with standing water remaining for hours and sometimes days after heavy rain.

Community members told the Samoa Observer the drains have not been properly repaired, leaving roads and nearby homes affected whenever rainfall intensifies.

“When the rain comes, the water has nowhere to go,” said resident Tavita Petaia. “It just spreads across the road and into our yards. We have to wait a long time before it dries.”

Another resident, Lagi Toleafoa, said the problem has become part of daily life during wet weather.

“Even a short heavy shower floods this place,” she said. “Children walk through dirty water to reach the bus. Sometimes vehicles avoid the road completely.”

Parents also raised health concerns, saying stagnant water attracts mosquitoes and produces foul smells.

“My kids come home with wet shoes and dirty clothes,” said mother Mele Sio. “We worry about sickness because the water stays too long.”

Motorist Iakopo Seumalo described the road as unsafe during rainfall.

“Drivers slow down because the road disappears under water,” he said. “It becomes dangerous at night.”

Residents are calling for urgent repairs before heavier rains arrive again.

“We just want proper drainage,” said community member Lepale Tuimalealiifano. “Fix the drains, and the flooding will stop.”

Villagers say they hope authorities will address the issue soon to prevent further inconvenience and health risks for families living in the area.
