Contractors were deployed Friday morning after a landslide struck Luatuanu’u at 8:42 am, blocking part of the roadway and causing traffic delays.

A public notice issued on 13 February 2026 confirmed that debris had fallen onto the road and that a contractor was on the way to clear the area. Motorists were advised to drive with caution when passing through the affected section.

Resident Fesolofi Anetele’a said he noticed vehicles slowing down as drivers attempted to navigate around the dirt and rocks.

“It was risky because some drivers did not see the debris until they were close,” he said. “We are thankful no one was hurt, but this shows how quickly these things can happen.”

In nearby Lauli’i, villagers are also expressing concern about unstable hillsides following recent wet weather. Totoa Pama said residents remain worried whenever there is prolonged rain.

“The soil becomes loose, and it can slide anytime,” she said. “We depend on this road every day for work and school. We hope authorities continue to monitor these areas closely.”

Authorities have reminded drivers to reduce speed and remain alert while the clearing works continue. No injuries were reported, and officials say they will keep monitoring both Luatuanu’u and surrounding villages for any further risks.
