Vailoa fuel station now self service

The busy CB Meredith Gas Station in Vailoa introduced self-service fueling last Friday, a first for the business in Vailoa. According to owner Toleafoa Mark Meredith, the shift was prompted by several factors, including a shortage of staff.

“There are reasons [for the change], but maybe one of the top ones is the shortage of workers,” Meredith said in an interview with the Samoa Observer. “But we still have competent staff available to help, especially older customers who may need assistance.”

When the Samoa Observer visited the station on Tuesday, several motorists appeared momentarily confused, parking and waiting before realising they needed to exit their vehicles to fuel up. One customer asked when the new system had been introduced.

Toleafoa confirmed that the Vailoa branch is currently the only one of his two stations operating as self-service. The other location is in Taufusi.

Beyond staffing issues, Toleafoa said the transition is also meant to give customers more control and ensure transparency at the pump.

“It’s to help the customers, so they know they’re getting the correct amount of fuel,” he said. “A lot of people don’t pay attention when their cars are being filled.” Although it’s early days, customer feedback has been mixed.

“Some people like it, some don’t,” Toleafoa said. “I’m not there all day, so I can’t say exactly, but my staff tell me a few people have complained.”

Toleafoa said the self-service model is likely to remain in place at the Vailoa location for the foreseeable future.

"I'm trying it out - It's still in early stages," said Toleafoa.
