Two people are dead in separate incidents last weekend and the Samoa Police urged the public to be cautious as the long weekend approaches.

A 65-year-old was pronounced dead upon reaching hospital after the vehicle he was driving in was involved in a single-car crash.

Police Commissioner Auapaau Logotino Filipo said alcohol was involved and the driver was believed to have been intoxicated while driving the vehicle.

He said the emergency responders from the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services tried their best at the scene, however, when they arrived at the hospital, the man was pronounced dead.

The second incident on Sunday was a drowning. A 41-year-old man was with his family in Vavau having a swim when he was caught by currents.

Auapaau said bystanders recovered the man and tried to resuscitate him but to no avail.

“The loss of life is a tragedy under any circumstances and it impacts families. This is why there is a need for all to be vigilant and cautious,” he said.

“This long weekend, we expect many people to consume liquor and many families will be heading to beaches and swimming spots for picnics with families.

“If you are drinking, please do not drive. You are putting your life and the lives of others with you at risk. If you are going to the beach, always have someone who knows how to swim watch over the children. Even adults who do not know how to swim, please do not endanger your lives.”

Samoa police will be out and about conducting roadblocks.
