In a ceremony marked by tradition and solemnity, former member of parliament Tuala Nikotemo Palamo was officially sworn in as the Assistant  President of the Land and Titles Court (LTC) on Friday.

The event took place at the LTC courtroom, drawing attendance from members of the judiciary including LTC President Lesatele Rapi Va’ai, Vice President, LTC Judges, and Tuala’s close family and supporters.

Tuala's judicial journey began in 2019 when he was first appointed as a judge of the LTC.

Prior to his judicial appointment, Tuala served as a member of parliament representing the Tautua Samoa party, where he was known for his commitment to community values and traditional governance.

During his address at the ceremony, Tuala conveyed gratitude for the confidence placed in him to take on such a significant leadership role within the LTC.

"I am deeply honoured by this appointment and grateful for the trust shown in me," he said. "I vow to do my utmost to fulfil the responsibilities that come with this position."

He emphasised the importance of the Land and Titles Court in preserving Samoa’s customs and resolving disputes rooted in fa’a Samoa (the Samoan way of life), acknowledging the weight of the matters that come before the court. Tuala also expressed his intention to approach his new duties with humility and faith.

"I will continue to rely on God’s guidance as I take on this role. The work of the LTC is vital to our people and our cultural identity, and I am committed to serving with integrity and respect for the traditions of our nation," he said.

Tuala’s appointment is seen as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to strengthening the LTC, a cornerstone institution in Samoa’s dual legal system that upholds traditional authority and land matters alongside civil law.

The LTC President also spoke on behalf of the LTC to congratulate Tuala on his new appointment and wish him well on his journey.

The ceremony concluded with blessings and words of encouragement, as family members and dignitaries congratulated Tuala on his elevation to Assistant President. His swearing-in marks a new chapter in a career dedicated to public service, justice, and the upholding of Samoan values.
