New homes for vulnerable families

New homes for vulnerable families, wheelchairs for those with special needs, and construction of access roads and equipment for churches and village groups are a few of many projects made possible under the $1 million incentive.
The progress on the projects was inspected by the Steering Committee for the $1 million district development project (DDP) during its visit to the islands of Upolu and Savaii.
Led by the Minister of Women Community and Social Development, Lagaaia Talaituau the officials got to see the funds materialised into various community-based projects and their benefit to the communities.
In the district of Aana Alofi No.2, 11 vulnerable families of Fasitoo uta received building materials lifting the living standard for the households.
One of the residents told the Steering Committee how upgrading their homes from the building materials benefitted his growing family who was unable to afford the costs on their own.
In the same district, two youths from one family are wheelchair-bound and funding from the project went towards purchasing the wheelchairs and renovating their home to make it convenient for them to commute.
A woman from Faleula was happy to share how her seriously ill child received food supplies suitable for his nutritional needs.
For churches from different denominations, their proposal for chairs, tables and ceiling fans got approval from their respective districts.
Multiple schools from the districts in Upolu such as Levi Saleimoa got a new school hall and Salepoua'e was able to use the fund for their canteen and toilet block for students.
Mt Zion Primary School in Aana Alofi No.1 showcased laptops, upgrades to the school library and a screen for learning, all made possible through a proposal to their district council.
In terms of village development, the Steering Committee inspected newly constructed access roads, women's committee halls, market carparks tar sealing and landscaping in Afega, brick fences, women's weaving committee handicrafts and others.
The Steering Committee continue their site visit in Savaii.
