Power outages to continue

The public will continue to experience frequent power outages in the coming days as the Electric Power Corporation (EPC) works to address key challenges within Samoa’s power infrastructure.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the EPC assured the public that it is actively addressing issues that have caused these outages but emphasised that the disruptions are expected to persist until necessary repairs and upgrades are completed.

"We understand the inconvenience these outages cause and appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time," the statement read.

The statement highlighted several ongoing challenges impacting the power supply, including a faulty underground transmission line, electricity generation shortfalls, and damage caused by severe weather events.

EPC is working to address these issues through several measures designed to stabilize and improve the electricity system.

One key project involves the construction of an overhead redundancy line from Siusega to the Fuluasou substation via Tuanaimato. This new line aims to provide a more stable and alternative pathway for power transmission. "This work is due to be completed within two weeks from the date of this notice," EPC stated.

In addition to upgrading transmission infrastructure, the EPC was also working on maintaining and restoring capacity to the Fiaga generators. "Maintenance on our Fiaga generators is ongoing to restore their full capacity, and additional generators are being procured to meet increasing electricity demand," the statement noted. "The EPC has placed orders for additional generators to support growing electricity demand."

Further exacerbating the situation, recent extreme weather conditions, particularly the severe storms on Sunday, 9 March caused widespread damage to power lines and infrastructure across the island. EPC teams are actively working to repair the affected areas and restore services as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, the EPC implemented a scheduled power rationing program to manage the current electricity constraints.

EPC urged residents and businesses to strictly follow the published notices regarding power schedules to ensure a fair and organised distribution of electricity. "Please stay informed through EPC's official channels for updates," the statement advised.

To help the public prepare for power outages, EPC has outlined several practical measures to ensure safety and convenience during disruptions:

1. Charge Essential Devices: Keep mobile phones, flashlights, and power banks fully charged in case of extended outages.

2. Stock Up on Necessities: Have an emergency kit ready, including bottled water, non-perishable food, and essential medications.

3. Use Alternative Lighting: Ensure you have candles, lanterns, or battery-powered lights available.

4. Safeguard Appliances: Unplug sensitive electronics during outages to prevent damage when power is restored.

5. Conserve Energy: Reduce electricity consumption during peak hours to support grid stability.

6. Stay Updated: Follow EPC's official website and social media for real-time updates on power restoration efforts.

Despite the ongoing challenges, EPC remains committed to restoring stable electricity services and appreciates the public’s continued support. "We assure you that every effort is being made to complete the necessary repairs as swiftly as possible," the statement concluded.

The public expressed disappointment and concerns over the impact of the frequent power outages in the past weeks. Many have described the situation devastating and called for more efforts and actions to address the ongoing problem.
