Cabinet to ask Speaker to declare conflict of interest

In a new twist in the nation’s parliamentary drama, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa and her cabinet will introduce a motion before the parliament for Speaker Papalii Lio Masipau to declare his conflict of interest in the motion of no confidence against the cabinet.
Fiame had indicated on Monday that there was a conflict of interest from Papalii.
“Honourable Speaker, the cabinet is also prepared to formalise a motion concerning this matter that includes a conflict of interest from you and your Deputy Speaker,” she told Parliament on Monday.
The nature of the conflict has not been specified.
Parliament ended early yesterday after a disagreement regarding the motion of no-confidence against the cabinet. While the Speaker wanted the motion to be discussed after all parliamentary debate and voting on bills was completed, the cabinet had called for the motion to be heard immediately while the opposition said while they supported a motion of no-confidence, they did not agree with the removal of the prime minister and to be replaced by the new leader of the FAST party.
Fiame survived a vote of no-confidence last week.
