The Moataa Rugby Union will have a sevens tournament as part of their centennial celebrations later in the year and hopes to make it an annual event.

Moataa Rugby president Lenatai Victor Tamapua said their centennial celebrations will commence with a church service on 1 June at the Moataa Congregational Christian Church coinciding with Samoa's Independence Day celebrations.

"We start with a service to commence our celebration. The next day, I believe Samoa, we will celebrate independence so there will be no program in the morning. But in the afternoon we will have our ava ceremony to welcome all our players and those who have come to celebrate this milestone with us. Followed by a fellowship at our field rugby," he said.

"A parade will be done on Tuesday, and for Wednesday will be a fun day for everyone. For Thursday, I believe it's an important day for us hence we call it a "Community Day". This is the day our club will be able to give back to our community whether it would be a planting or perhaps a clean-up.

"For Friday and Saturday, those are the days for our sevens tournament. We have reached out to our overseas players in Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, and America if they have teams to enter. Some have expressed interest in the tournament, so perhaps they will confirm with us soon. But it is also open to our local teams who would want to take part."

Their program will take place at the Moataa rugby field. There will be other activities for the upcoming event. They will have a centennial ball where they will acknowledge every player under the Moataa rugby team flag.

Vice-chair Asi Sagagauatasi Keve Tunupopo said the sevens tournament will be an annual event starting this year.

"This will be Moata'as help in trying to develop the sevens rugby in our country. As you know the Marist sevens is hosted by Marist, we have always been helping them make that possible. We have been given the green light by Lakapi Samoa, that starting this year, Moataa will be having this seven's tournament as an annual event," he said.

The chairman of the 100-year celebration, Tofaeono Iupati Fuata'i confirmed that All Blacks legend Savae Sir Michael Jones will be part of the celebration. He has given so much in preparation for this. Asi also emphasised that there are a lot of players from their rugby union who have made it to national teams and have signed contracts overseas.
