Language concern on Miss Pacific Island platforms
Miss Pacific Island organisers reminded the public of the use of profane language on the platform during the pre-pageant interview on Thursday.
The Miss Pacific Islands pageant is currently on in the Solomon Islands with crowning to be held on Saturday.
With countries putting their support behind their contestants, some social media users have started using vulgarity and attacking contestants. There has also been racial abuse hurled at the contestants or between users from different countries.
The organising committee has put its foot down and has issued a stern warning. They said the pageant was a celebration of unity, diversity and all Pacific cultures.
The notice served as a reminder to all who are watching and following the Miss Pacific Islands activities to maintain a respectful and positive environment on the Miss Pacific Island's page.
"We ask that you refrain from using vulgar or profane language in your comments and posts. Our community thrives on mutual respect and understanding, and your cooperation in upholding these standards is greatly appreciated," said the organisers.
"Please note that we reserve the right to remove any content that violates this guideline. Thank you for your understanding and support in making our community a welcoming space for all."
The voting for the Miss Internet award also sparked rude exchanges between Samoans and Tongans as they tred to boost their contestants for this special award. People are claiming that votes were bought.
The organisers said the so-called bought votes will not be counted as a vote. It is unclear how the Miss Pacific Island Committee will determine which votes were bought and which were not.
To date, Tonga has taken the lead for the online voting with 108,000 votes, followed by Samoa with 97,400 and then Kiribati with 45,100 votes.
A float parade was held on Friday through the streets of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.
The reigning Miss Pacific Island, Moemoana Safaatoa Schwenke will crown her next successor on Saturday night and officially marks the end of her reign.
