Samoa's Police, Prison, and Correction Services (S.P.P.C.S.) have apprehended and charged three individuals in what is being hailed as the largest drug bust in the nation's history.

The operation, which resulted in the seizure of more than $4 million worth of crystal methamphetamine at the wharf, has captured widespread attention and is seen as a major victory in Samoa's ongoing battle against drug trafficking.

The meth was discovered concealed inside packets of Lifesaver candies and had come on a ship which had made port in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

In response to queries from the Samoa Observer, Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo confirmed that the three suspects, including a businessman who owns a supermarket in Lotopa, have been charged with possession and importation of narcotics, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues.

Auapa'au revealed that the businessman had been on the police's radar for some time before the bust.

The three individuals are scheduled to make their first court appearance on 10 February.

The drug bust unfolded on Wednesday when Samoa's Ministry of Customs and Revenue (M.C.R.) intercepted a container belonging to the Lotopa-based business at the Apia Wharf.

Inside, authorities discovered approximately 10 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, which was subsequently confirmed using NIK test kits. A further round of testing is set to be conducted to verify the substance.

In a statement, the M.C.R. emphasised the significance of the seizure, stating, "The substance was confirmed using NIK test kits, and further tests will be conducted. Details will be provided once all procedures are completed."

The total value of the confiscated drugs is estimated to exceed AU$2 million, with each kilogram of crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately AU$250,000. "So, with 10 kgs, that’s over AUD$2 million," Commissioner Auapa'au noted.

Following the initial seizure, police conducted further searches at the local business, which is believed to have been involved in the importation of the drugs.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the operation.

Commissioner Filipo commended the efforts of the customs officials and acknowledged the scale of the operation. "This is a substantial amount of illicit drugs smuggled into Samoa," he said, stressing the importance of continued vigilance at the country's borders.

"This operation is a testament to the effectiveness of our enforcement agencies and their commitment to protecting the people of Samoa."

The bust is being hailed as a major success for Samoa's border enforcement agencies, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in their fight against drug trafficking.

The seizure of such a large quantity of illicit drugs has sparked renewed calls for heightened awareness and enhanced efforts to combat the illegal drug trade.
