Repair works have started on the road in Fugalei. Heavy rain and floods have washed off most of the road making it near impossible for motorists to travel through one of the main arterial roads to the Apia township.

Ott Construction started working on the damage next to the Treasure Garden restaurant on Tuesday.

The potholes have become so big that even big trucks are finding it difficult.

Residents and businesses on Fugalei hope that a permanent fixture will be done to avoid the flooding from happening again.

"As someone who stayed here for some time now, this is always the case whenever it is the heavy rainfall season. We do fear that after flooding, there will be lots of insects such as mosquitoes and others that cause diseases," said Rita Amataga.

"We do hope that it gets fixed to the point where we don't have to worry about the water making its way here."

An employee from one of the stores in Fugalei who did not wish to be identified said the road needed to be fixed as quickly as possible.

According to the Land Transport Authority, a permanent fix to the flood problem in Fugalei requires a substantial amount of money. LTA said the road would need to be raised and the waterways cleared to avoid the flooding situation.

The government has yet to give an estimate of the total cost of the damages done to infrastructure by the adverse weather felt in the last few weeks.
