Tuilaepa willing to meet Fiame
Opposition Leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said he will accept a call from Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa to meet at any time just as long as he's not being called up when he’s sleeping.
Following a press conference from Fiame, Tuilaepa told the media on Tuesday that many good things come out of such meetings.
He said a previous meeting he had with Fiame and his party members where a Harmony Agreement was signed by the parties at the time of the 2021 political crisis to withdraw petitions from both sides.
“Anytime she would call to meet except for when I’m sleeping, she shouldn’t call when I’m resting,” said Tuilaepa.
He noted the last meeting over the Harmony Agreement was fruitful and was done in good faith but recalled that little did he know that he and Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi would be charged in parliament.
“It was good but little did we know there something sinister would follow but we will not give up.
“We look at it and deliberate on it because behind all of this is the cry from our country as mentioned by the church leader during the recent government prayer service to keep the peace in our country.”
Prime Minister Fiame was asked during the press conference whether she had met with the Opposition Leader to discuss matters pertaining to the latest political situation.
She responded she had not met with him but was certain they would have the opportunity to do so when the leaders consult ahead of the first parliamentary sitting next week.
She explained there is a Parliamentary Committee that she, Tuilaepa, the Speaker and other representatives are in to discuss parliament's calendar and programme and that would be another opportunity for her to meet Tuilaepa.
“But I think with the current controversy the meeting cannot be avoided with the Opposition Leader as they are another main party in the House. Plus our matter is heading there.”
Meanwhile, Tuilaepa also welcomed a meeting with La’auli when he was pressed by the media.
He stated Fiame and La’auli were in his cabinet reminding him that they had previously made multiple allegations concerning the sale of customary lands to Chinese investors but nothing like that was done.
