Inter-island services resume

The inter-island ferry services resumed on Sunday after postponements due to bad weather which brought strong winds and high waves posing safety risks for travellers.

Many travelling between Upolu and Savaii were stranded for a day or two.

People stranded in the two main domestic wharves were very happy that they finally arrived at their destination safe and sound. They also acknowledged the work and efforts of the ship captain and his crew in ensuring that they were brought to the wharf safely.

Taimua Toa who was travelling on the 8 am ferry from Savaii to Upolu said the ride was calm and he is happy that he was home before he departs for Australia on Monday.

"I was sitting there at the Salelologa wharf and thought to myself, I am going to miss my flight. We had prayers and the people were singing hymns all last night," he said.

"It was a wonderful time and one of the things I would take back home with me. The power of prayer. I sat there and observed how our cultural values were shown at that time.

"People who came to Samoa for the first time were able to experience our culture and spiritual values at a place where they least expected.

"When we came on the ferry today (Sunday), I thanked God for his love and mercy. But taking this opportunity to acknowledge the work done by the captain and his crew.

"They knew that yesterday's weather was not safe for us and despite the people trying to force them to make a trip to Upolu, they stood their ground. They understand the marine life more than anyone. So thank you captain and your crew. Malo lava."

Other travellers who were on the same ferry as Taimua said they weren't in a rush to come and they were willing to come whenever it was safe for them to travel.

According to some, even though they wanted to come home as soon as possible, they also understood that those working on the ferries knew when it was safe to travel.

"The people working on the ferries understand the sea better than anyone else. So, if they say it's not safe then it isn't. We just have to wait and pray. And here we are, we made it home safe and sound," said a passenger.

Samoa Airways announced on Saturday that the rescheduled flights on the weekend will operate in and out of the Faleolo Regional Terminal.
