Unexpected power outages impacting rural health facilities will soon be less problematic with the procurement of four generators costing close to $400,000 to accommodate those heading to the district hospitals.

This follows the approval of the supply and installation of four generators in the selected district hospitals of Lalomanu, Poutasi, Safotu and Foailalo.

The Tenders Board signed off the deal during its virtual meeting on 22 November 2024 and recommended awarding the contract to the lowest evaluated bidder; Lelefu Tupai trading as L.T.T. Electrical and Re-Frigeration and Air-con at a total revised bid of $384,000 inclusive of taxes.

The Ministry of Health has been instructed to liaise with the Office of the Attorney General in finalising the contract agreement with the successful supplier and advise all bidders of the outcome of the evaluation.

Towards the end of last year, the government officially opened several upgrade works in the health facilities and doctor residences in the rural hospitals for both Upolu and Savaii.

The expansion work in Lalomanu at a total cost of $490,000 also includes a doctor’s residence which will make it convenient for the health practitioner to respond to emergencies and patients in the district.

Poutasi Falealili also opened doors to doctors' residences and refurbishment work for the district hospital for $480,000 funded by the government.

According to the Ministry of Health, All Electrical Company Ltd was awarded the contract for Lalomanu and Poutasi health facilities supervised by Meresaini Laulua.

In Foailalo Savaii the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiative funded by UNICEF was launched providing new lavatories and rubbish bins for the district hospital.

The projects contribute to the overall objective of reforms to strengthen health services for rural areas through district hospitals, community health work, and outreach programmes.
