Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa is scheduled to visit American Samoa next week to participate in the inauguration of Governor-elect Pula Nikolao Pula and Lieutenant Governor-elect Pulu Ae Ae Jr. 

The swearing-in ceremony is set for 3 January 2025. Accompanying the Prime Minister will be Agafili Shem Leo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

This visit underscores the close ties between Samoa and American Samoa, reflecting a shared commitment to regional collaboration and mutual support. 

Governor-elect Pula, a seasoned civil servant with over two decades of experience as Director of the Office of Territorial and Insular Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, brings a wealth of knowledge in territorial governance and intergovernmental relations. Lieutenant Governor-elect Pulu Ae Ae Jr., a retired U.S. Army officer and former member of the American Samoa House of Representatives, has spent the past decade managing the Pago Pago Field Office of Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata.

In his victory statement, Governor-elect Pula emphasised unity: "We need to come together and heal any wounds or divisions that a long campaign creates in our families and villages. Please be kind to one another. Please let God's spirit propel us forward in the days and years ahead."

Outgoing Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga graciously acknowledged the election outcome, stating, "When the people speak, those of us who serve at the will of the people must listen. It is how democracy works and best serves our community. To that end, I extend my congratulations to Governor-elect Pula Nikolao Pula and Lt. Governor-elect Pulu Ae Jr." He further expressed his commitment to a smooth transition, noting that he has reached out to the Governor-elect to facilitate this process.

The new administration in American Samoa is expected to prioritise uniting the territory and addressing critical issues such as economic development and infrastructure improvement. The first transition meeting in the territory was held last week, marking the beginning of this new chapter.

Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Fiame is expected to return to Samoa in time for the nation's annual prayer service and fasting scheduled for 5 January.
