The Samoa Faafafine Association gathered at St Theresa Catholic Church on Sunday morning for a candlelight service to commemorate World AIDS Day.

This year's theme was "Take the Right Path - My Health, My Right".

The first case of HIV recorded in Samoa was in 1990. Since then, 26 cumulative cases have been reported. According to data present on government reports, there are currently there are 13 living cases of HIV, however, this could change.

In 2018, two new cases of HIV were detected as testing services expanded their coverage, marking the first new cases since 2013. Though HIV is low prevalence in Samoa, other factors highlight susceptibility to future outbreaks. The high positivity rates of other STI’s (Chlamydia at 23.7 per cent in 2018), are also a concern and pose risks for increasing HIV transmission.

Additionally, STI testing overall has low population coverage. Roughly 14 per cent of people above the age of 15 were tested for a least one type of STI in 2018. Less than 10 per cent were tested for HIV. However, HIV and STI have greatly increased over the last five years showing an increasing trend of improved testing coverage.

The Samoa Faafafine Association Incorporated issued a statement saying that the service was a powerful reminder of unity, health, and human rights. They will continue to advocate for awareness and support those living with and affected by HIV or AIDS.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Catholic Church of Lepea, especially Afioga Patele and his clergy for their warm hospitality and unwavering support in hosting this significant event," said the association.

"Each year, the Samoa Faafafine Association (S.F.A) leads with heartfelt dedication in commemorating World AIDS Day, ensuring that we not only honour the lives impacted by HIV/AIDS but also continue to spread awareness, fight stigma, and promote inclusivity and health for all."

The S.F.A also celebrated the official opening of the Faafafine and Faatama Week and the launch of their Miss Samoa Faafafine pageant 2024. There are six contestants vying for the title this year and will be representing the vibrant diversity and strength of the community as they inspire us to embrace inclusion, resilience and pride.

The six contestants are Starlene Tuamanuvao, Ally Talalelei, Auomanu Hoeflich Lolo, Sarah Sula Uelese, Ella Ganza, and June Catriona Peseta.
