Tuilaepa will contest in 2026 election
In a resolute display of political longevity, veteran parliamentarian and Leader of the Human Rights Protection Party (H.R.P.P.), Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi made it clear that retirement is not on the horizon.
At 80, the seasoned politician who served as Samoa’s Prime Minister for over two decades reaffirmed his commitment to public service and his vision for the country’s future.
In response to questions from this newspaper, Tuilaepa confirmed that he has no plans to step down from his seat in the Lepa constituency ahead of the next General Election in 2026.
“I still have much to contribute to Samoa,” he stated, emphasising his enduring dedication to the nation.
Tuilaepa remains optimistic about the H.R.P.P.’s position in Samoa’s political landscape.
Reflecting on the last General Election, he pointed out that, despite losing power to newcomers the FAST Party, the H.R.P.P. garnered the majority of votes overall.
According to Tuilaepa, this outcome highlighted the strong public support for his party, even in the face of significant challenges.
He acknowledged, however, that a high number of candidates running under the H.R.P.P. banner in the previous election resulted in a split of votes among their supporters, an issue he described as a critical lesson for the party.
“We’ve learned from that experience,” he said. “We are refining our strategies to ensure we are better prepared for 2026.”
Excitement is brewing within the H.R.P.P. ranks as prospective candidates have already expressed interest in contesting under the party’s banner in the upcoming election.
Tuilaepa sees this as a promising sign of the party's vitality and resilience. As the leader, he is spearheading efforts to fine-tune their campaign strategies, confident that these preparations will position the H.R.P.P. strongly in the next electoral race.
The former Prime Minister’s determination to remain in politics underscores his enduring influence and commitment to Samoa’s development.
