Smiles, hugs, and tears of joy defined the atmosphere at the Congregational Christian Church Samoa’s Malua Theological College on Saturday, as 30 graduates celebrated a significant milestone in their academic and spiritual journeys.

The ceremony held at the Malua Jubilee Church saw graduates achieve various academic honours. One student received a Diploma in Theology, 15 earned Bachelor of Theology degrees, 11 graduated with Bachelor of Divinity with honours, and three achieved Master of Theology degrees with distinction.

Despite the morning rain, thousands of family members, friends, and loved ones gathered from near and far to witness the occasion, undeterred by the weather.

The Chairman of the Board of Malua Reverend Elder Asotasi Gu Time led the special service. Meanwhile, the Principal of the College, Rev. Prof. Vaitusi Nofoa'iga delivered the academic year report.

He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the church, families, and communities towards the college and its programs.

Rev. Prof. Nofoa'iga highlighted the historic milestone of the college’s 180th anniversary, describing it as a testament to the institution’s enduring impact in Samoa and across the Pacific.

He also commended the dedication of the Malua Theological College staff for their tireless efforts throughout the year.

Speaking directly to the graduates, Rev. Prof. Nofoa'iga urged them to approach their next steps in ministry with humility and faith. He thanked their families, friends, and congregations for their steadfast prayers and support, which contributed to the success of the students.

Among the graduates were Caesar Utufua and his wife Norah McCarthy-Utufua who shared their reflections with the Samoa Observer. Overwhelmed with emotion, the couple described their four-year journey at Malua as one defined by "grace."

"It was all God’s grace," Norah said. "We had different expectations before coming to Malua, but the experiences and lessons we’ve gained are invaluable."

Caesar added, "It wasn’t an easy journey. The challenges were real, but the friendships and bonds we formed here are something we will cherish forever."

The couple credited their success to divine guidance, emphasising that their decision to study at Malua was driven by faith.

They dedicated their achievements to their late fathers, who inspired their paths, and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support of their mothers, families, and communities.

Asked about their plans, the couple said, "Our hope is in God. We don’t know what’s next, but we trust God to guide us."

Hailing from multiple villages, including Nofoali’i, Moata’a, Falelatai, Apia, and Falefa, the couple represents the broad community spirit that underpins Malua Theological College.

As the graduates embark on their next chapters, the ceremony was a celebration of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and the unwavering support of the Congregational Christian Church Samoa.

For 180 years, Malua Theological College has been a beacon of theological education, equipping leaders rooted in faith and service. This year’s graduates now join that proud legacy, carrying with them the lessons, connections, and grace that have shaped their time at Malua.
