A call has been made by the Moata'a Rugby Club to former players and members to come together and discuss ideas on how they could best celebrate their 100th anniversary year.

The Moata'a Rugby Club is one of the nation's oldest rugby clubs and plans to have their anniversary from 1 June to 8 June 2025.

"Ulalei Rugby Club, being the first ever rugby club in the country was the name given to the combination of both Vaiala and Moata'a and was first created in 1924," said Club President Lenata'i Victor Lamapua.

He said many topics needed to be discussed for the anniversary.

In 1925, the Moata'a village decided it would be better if the Ulalei club split into two teams, so they split the Ulalei team and formed two teams, which are now Moata'a Rugby Club and Vaiala Rugby Club.

Naturally, rugby is the main event that draws people to Moata'a. In addition, it brings the entire community together to commemorate the 100th anniversary and create new Moata'a game teams.

The club is also planning a sevens tournament during its centennial celebrations.

"There is no doubt that we will hold a ceremony to honour Moata'a club members who are no longer with us," said Lenata'i.

"We are excited to meet with former Moata'a players and students on Saturday 7 December to talk about organising our celebration of our 100th anniversary next year."
