Samoa's taxis have become tech-savvy with the launch of the nation's first-ever taxi app on Thursday by SKYEYE Pacific.

It is called the Maua Taxi App.

Chief Executive Officer Faasootauloa Sam Saili said this app provides benefits for its users in ways such as equitable and transparent fare pricing, prompt and efficient service delivery to the commuting locals and visiting friends and relatives and also tourists.

"The safety of the passengers and drivers is also taken care of with all rides logged within the platform and an option to choose a female driver," he said.

"This is cost-saving for taxi drivers because they no longer have to drive around looking for passengers, the platform will send them the ride that is closest to their location."

SKYEYE started working on the app with the Land Transport Authority five years ago.

Fare charges have been the subject of dispute and the Maua Taxi app provides a solution for the taxi service providers by using a combination of location and distance to calculate fares as close as possible to the taxi fares set by LTA.

Faasootauloa said the app is an extension of the silent campaign to improve road safety and help protect lives and assets.

17 taxi stands have already been consulted and eight have been registered and can use the app right now.

These eight taxi stands include 777 Taxi Stand, State Cab, City Cab, Feiloaimauso, TR, Freddy's, Alafua Raider and Tuvao.

SKYEYE Pacific acknowledged the Samoa Tourism Authority for assistance and guidance, Vodafone for free rating to enable users to provide feedback and also Business Hub for assisting in consultations and stakeholder onboarding.
