We are doing it for literacy: sponsors

It is about fostering education and literacy say the sponsors of the Samoa Observer Short Story Competition.

The competition now in its 14th year was a brainchild of Samoa Observer editor-in-chief Savea Sano Malifa and senior editorial staff Marge Moore. Savea wanted to give a platform for young writers to express their creativity and at the same time promote literacy.

Over the years the competition has produced amazing young writers.

The success of the Samoa Observer Short Story Competition is dependent on help from the corporate sector.

Vodafone Samoa, Samoa Stationery and Books (SSAB) and Eveni have partnered with the newspaper to ensure that the annual competition was a success.

For SSAB chief executive officer, Afioga Tofilau Fiti Leung Wai, the aim to promote education and literacy is a task she holds close to her heart.

“Education and literacy are at the core of my passion and commitment to the people of Samoa. It is through initiatives like the Samoa Observer short story competition that we can inspire our youth to express their creativity and cultivate a love for reading and writing,” she said.

“I acknowledge the dedication of Samoa Observer in promoting literacy and creativity in Samoa. I look forward to continuing our partnership so we can continue to empower our youth through education.”

Vodafone chief executive officer Rana Bose said this year’s theme “My Future” at the Samoa Observer 2024 Tusitala Story Competition story writing contest aimed to inspire children to envision a brighter, more sustainable future.

“By encouraging young writers to imagine innovative solutions to challenges for a small Island nation like Samoa. The contest fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility, a message to the leaders of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting,” he said.

“Through storytelling, children will have the opportunity to express their ideas about sustainability, explore the impact of their actions, and develop empathy for the world around them. This theme not only nurtures their writing skills but also creates awareness about important issues, empowering them to become thoughtful, informed citizens.

“Ultimately, the contest will help children build confidence in their voices while motivating them to dream big and contribute positively to their communities and the environment.”

Mr Bose said Vodafone Samoa, like other years, joined hands with Samoa Observer as a sponsor, as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, reflecting a commitment to fostering education and creativity in the community.

He said by supporting such competitions, the company demonstrates a genuine investment in the development of young minds.

“This initiative can promote literacy and storytelling skills, which are crucial for personal and academic growth. Ultimately, such efforts showcase the company’s dedication to making a positive impact, aligning its business goals with the greater good of Samoa. Together we can,” he added.

The prizes that the winners take home have been provided by the sponsors.

Samoa Observer Publisher Muliaga Jean Malifa said sponsors like Vodafone Samoa, SSAB and Eveni are important partners in ensuring the success of the initiative that began 14 years ago and she thanked them.
