Opposition Leader Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi is urging all cabinet ministers and elected officials to remain in Samoa as the nation prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.) next month.

During his weekly press conference, Tuilaepa highlighted the historical importance of this summit, noting that Samoa is the first Pacific Island nation to host such a prestigious gathering.

Tuilaepa stressed the need for unity among leaders, stating that all cabinet ministers and members of parliament must be present in Samoa during the meeting.

He expressed concern over reports of a political fundraiser organised by the ruling party, coinciding with the summit.

“It reflects poorly on our country if leaders, particularly cabinet ministers, choose to miss the meeting for personal gain,” he said.

Tuilaepa emphasised that prioritising the summit is essential, warning that participation in fundraising activities during such a critical time could suggest self-serving motives.

In a pointed remark, Tuilaepa recounted a statement allegedly made by a cabinet minister expressing a preference to attending the fundraiser rather than the meeting, citing the lack of financial benefit from the summit. He described this attitude as a “classic example of bad leadership.”

Highlighting the community spirit among the villages across Samoa, Tuilaepa praised the efforts of residents working together to beautify the country in preparation for the event.

He called on the business community, particularly those in urban areas, to contribute to these efforts, stating, “We can host a successful meeting if we all come together and support the government.”

The upcoming C.H.O.G.M. is anticipated to draw significant international attention, and Tuilaepa believes it represents a unique opportunity for Samoa to showcase its culture and hospitality.

He noted that while the ruling Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (F.A.S.T.) party plans to engage with supporters abroad, the focus should remain on the summit and its importance for the nation.

Attempts to obtain a response from F.A.S.T. Chair La'auli Leuatea Schmidt but it is understood that he is currently on official duty overseas.

As preparations continue, the emphasis on unity among Samoa's leadership and citizens is a critical message that resonates in the lead-up to this landmark event.
