40 recruits boost SFESA numbers

The Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (S.F.E.S.A.) proudly welcomed 40 new firefighters at a heartfelt celebration at Don Bosco Hall on Friday.

This event marked the culmination of an intensive 10-week training program for the recruits. It drew a crowd of Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials, diplomats, and the families and friends of the new firefighters.

Minister of S.F.E.S.A., Faualo Harry Schuster, delivered the keynote address, while Fire Commissioner Tanuvasa Petone Mauga reported on the significance of the new intake.

Tanuvasa emphasised the ongoing need for fresh recruits each year, especially in light of the temporary fire station recently opened in the Aana district and the construction of a permanent facility.

The need for additional firefighters was further highlighted by recent resignations, which created new vacancies that the authority aimed to fill.

“Given the increased demand from the Ambulance Service and numerous major structure fires, especially during the dry months, the government approved the Aana Station in Faleolo. This will serve as the first response station for emergency calls from the western side of Upolu,” Tanuvasa explained.

He noted that this initiative comes at a crucial time as Samoa prepares for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.) next month.

The Authority, with the support of its Board of Directors, submitted a budget for the fiscal year 2024/2025 to facilitate staffing and operation of the new Aana Station. The government approved 20 new firefighter positions.

However, the reassignment of existing staff to Aana Station revealed a further need for 20 additional positions, which are high-ranking and can only be filled by experienced personnel. These roles were advertised through various platforms, including the Public Service Commission (P.S.C.), the Authority's social media, website, and local newspapers.

Tanuvasa shared that they received 208 applications, all of which were screened and allowed to progress to the first two phases of the recruitment process.

These phases included a theoretical examination, short essay writing, report writing in English, mathematics, and a physical examination.

To move forward, candidates needed to achieve a minimum score of 80 per cent. Of the 186 candidates who attended the first two phases—120 males and 66 females—125 advanced to the interview stage.

Ultimately, 40 candidates, comprising 30 males and 10 females, were selected to undergo the 10-week firefighting training, which began on 10 July 2024.

“I am happy to say that these 40 recruits are now equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to respond as emergency first responders in various situations,” Tanuvasa stated.

“They will operate under the strict supervision of Commanders and Senior Station Officers at fire stations across Upolu and Savai'i.” He acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the need for improved training facilities that can accommodate practical training scenarios, but expressed pride in the completion of the training program on schedule.

During the ceremony, Cadet Firefighter Galahad Faaoso Tavalagi, who was recognised as the Top Overall candidate, expressed gratitude for his family’s unwavering support throughout his training.

“This has been a lifelong dream for me,” the 21-year-old remarked.

He reflected on his unexpected success, winning two top awards, and attributed his achievements to God’s guidance and his parents' encouragement from Savai'i.

Galahad hails from the villages of Sataua, Falealupo, Salelologa, Nofoali'i, and Vaitele-Fou, embodying the spirit of dedication and community that the new recruits bring to S.F.E.S.A.
