After more than 10 years of being an observer, American Samoa is set to join the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) as an associate member, marking a significant step in its regional engagement.

Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga announced this development following the conclusion of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting held last week.

Governor Mauga emphasised the shared heritage and common challenges that American Samoa and its Pacific neighbours face.

He noted that the collective goal is to work together towards a brighter future for the entire Pacific region, reflecting a recurring theme from the recent meeting in Tonga.

The Governor expressed his appreciation for the support from P.I.F. members that facilitated American Samoa’s new status.

He highlighted the valuable counsel, positive feedback, and backing received throughout the process, which were instrumental in achieving this milestone.

The endorsement came with a resolution of support from the Fono, demonstrating a united front in favor of this advancement.

Mauga also acknowledged the significant contributions of local leaders, particularly the Lt. Governor, who led a dedicated team to drive the application process forward. He praised the Fono’s backing as a testament to their commitment to the well-being of American Samoa’s people.

In conclusion, Governor Mauga stated that this new membership will enable American Samoa to collaborate with other Pacific leaders to tackle shared issues as part of the Blue Pacific Continent.

In a previous discussion, Samoa’s Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa expressed strong support for American Samoa’s participation in regional bodies, including PIF.

She also mentioned efforts to facilitate American Samoa’s involvement in the Polynesian Group, an initiative that American Samoa previously chaired and continues to pursue actively.
