New generators at Fuluasou substation
The Electric Power Corporation unveiled three new diesel generators at Fuluasou substation on Friday providing reliable and sufficient power to meet the growing electricity demand.
In total, four generators were purchased by E.P.C. with a price tag of $10.7 million, three of the new generators are now stationed at Fuluasou and the fourth one is servicing Savaii.
Each generator has a capacity of producing 2 megawatts of electricity and its addition means there is enough to cater to the nation's electricity demand.
The Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Vaai said a total of 32 megawatts of electricity is generated from the Fiaga generator, hydropower, solar and wind mill.
He said 30 megawatts is used to service the country leaving just 2 megawatts reserve and it was a concern for the corporation and led to the procurement of the four new generators.
Samoa is due to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October and the new generators will ensure reliable and sufficient power supply not only for the public use but also have enough supply for the high-level meeting.
Olo was pleased to note E.P.C’s contribution in offering affordable electricity to the public with the reduction of power cost from 2021 to date despite the cost of diesel going up.
The HNAC Technology Company is the main contractor for the project which the Minister acknowledged for their expertise, dedication and collaboration in bringing the vision to life.
He made special mention of E.P.C. for initiating and driving the project forward and their effort made the celebration possible.
The Speaker of the House, Papalii Lio Masipau had the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open doors to the new generators.
