The fauna and flora will talk back to people thanks to the Nature Trail Project where QR codes are being put up to make the Mt Vaea trail more interactive.

This has been done by the Samoa Conservation Society in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Samoa (M.N.R.E.).

The Mt Vaea Digital Nature trail is live. Two QR codes have been installed with the other two that are yet to be put up. One has been installed at the bottom of the mountain near the short trail, and the other at the tomb of Robert Louis Stevenson.

Samoa Conservation Society president James Atherton said codes can be scanned on electronic devices and the information on birds, plants, and other species will be available at your fingertips.

"The trails already exist. All we've done is create a webpage with information on the birds, bird calls, and all sorts of things about the trail. When you scan the code, you get a lot of information. We just created a digital native trail, and it is the first one in Samoa. And we want to do that around Samoa," he said.

When the QR codes are scanned, there is detailed information and photos on the natural history of the reserve, including the geology, plants and vegetation, bird photos, bird calls, butterflies, and even the Legend of Vaea and Apaula.

The Samoa Conservation Society on their official Facebook page acknowledged the people who were behind the project.

"We thank the Kneubuhl family for providing us the use of the text and illustrations of the legend of Vaea and Apaula. With gratitude also to Tissan Graphic Design for the excellent printing services as usual! Stay tuned for more QR codes as we further develop this trail and other digital nature trails across Samoa."
