The Apia International Port will be closed to all incoming and departing ships from 19 October to 26 October 2024.

This temporary closure is to accommodate the berthing of the Cruise Liner, Pacific Explorer, which will host distinguished guests attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

In a public notice issued on 1 June, the port authorities stated that the closure is essential to ensure the safety of all participants during this significant international event. The notice emphasized the need for cooperation from all stakeholders and the public, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the week-long shutdown.

"The Authority regrets any inconvenience this may cause and thanks its stakeholders and the public for their understanding and continued cooperation," the notice read.

The upcoming CHOGM is a landmark event for Samoa, with over 6,000 delegates expected to attend, including four monarchs. Among the dignitaries, King Charles III, the King of the United Kingdom and the head of the Commonwealth, will be present. King Charles III has expressed his enthusiasm for the event and his appreciation for Samoa’s leadership on global issues.

In a congratulatory message on Samoa's 62nd Independence Day, King Charles III acknowledged the milestone and shared his eagerness to visit Samoa. "I look forward to all Commonwealth members coming together in Samoa later in the year to reinforce our collective resilience and make progress on shared objectives, including climate change and the needs of Small Island Developing States, on which I recognise Samoa is a vocal advocate," he said.

"Samoa's leadership in driving international ambition to protect our environment is an inspiration to us all and I look forward to you playing a leading role on this at the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting."

The arrival of such high-profile guests underscores the importance of this event, not only for Samoa but for the entire Commonwealth. The C.H.O.G.M will provide a platform for leaders to discuss and address key global challenges, with a particular focus on climate change and the unique needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
