The early morning downpour on Monday could not dampen the patriotic spirit and enthusiasm of hundreds of Samoans from all walks of life and different age groups, as they gathered at Mulinu'u to commemorate the 62nd Independence Day celebration.

Despite the government scaling down the festivities this year, schools, organisations, companies, and government ministries showed up in force, proudly waving their Samoan flags high during the Independence march past.

Samoa's Head of State, His Highness Tuimaleali'ifano Va'aletoa Sualauvi II, addressed the nation with heartfelt reflections on the significance of the day. He shared fond memories of the inaugural Independence Day celebration 62 years ago, recalling his participation as a student from the A'ana district.

He mentioned that he never imagined he would one day stand before the nation, continuing the esteemed role that Samoa's Heads of State had graciously undertaken 62 years ago.

His Highness expressed his deep sense of pride and gratitude for being able to carry on the esteemed role of Samoa's former Heads of State, and he acknowledged the enduring spirit of independence and pride among the people.

His Highness acknowledged the presence and participation of everyone gathered to celebrate Samoa's sovereignty and freedom. He emphasised the importance of the occasion as an opportunity for the nation to unite and give thanks to Almighty God for His guidance and protection over the years.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of Samoa's forefathers, he urged the nation to remember and be grateful for the path they paved.

Commending the leaders of the three arms of government for their critical role in steering Samoa's development, His Highness also highlighted the pivotal contributions of church leaders, members of the clergy both in Samoa and abroad, community leaders, and development partners.

He extended his congratulations to Samoans working abroad, acknowledging their representation of Samoa's cultural heritage and their significant contributions to the country's economic development through remittances.

His Highness also used the occasion to appeal to the nation for unity and support as Samoa prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.) in October.

Highlighting the importance of this high-level meeting, he stressed that it is the first time a Pacific nation will host such an event, marking a recognition of Samoa's development and reputation on the global stage. He called for a collective effort to ensure the success of C.H.O.G.M. and urged villages, districts, and communities to maintain peace and order.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa echoed similar sentiments in her closing remarks. She reflected on Samoa's long journey and the significant milestones achieved over the years. Delighted by the smiles and excitement on everyone's faces during the celebration, she emphasised the importance of national collaboration as Samoa gears up to host C.H.O.G.M.

The celebrations in Mulinu'u were a vibrant display of Samoa's unity and pride. The presence of diverse groups, from students to professionals, highlighted the collective spirit of the nation. The scaled-down festivities did not diminish the significance of the day, as the march past and flag-waving underscored the deep-rooted patriotism of the Samoan people.

As Samoa looks forward to hosting C.H.O.G.M., the Independence Day celebration served as a reminder of the nation's achievements and the ongoing need for unity and cooperation.

In the spirit of unity and national pride, Samoa's 62nd Independence Day celebration was a testament to the enduring legacy of its forefathers and the continued strength and resilience of its people. As preparations for C.H.O.G.M. continue, the nation stands ready to showcase its progress and hospitality on the global stage.
