The echoes of victory resound throughout the island of Savai'i as the Amoa College Under 18 rugby team returned home adorned with glory after clinching the national championship in Upolu.

Saturday, 28 April 2024 marked a historic milestone etched deeply in the hearts of these young athletes, whose indomitable spirit led them to triumph against formidable opponents.

The celebrations overshadowed the ugly scenes that followed after the final whistle, as the team and it supporters were subjected to violence from unruly crowd.

Last week, amidst fervent anticipation, the Amoa College team emerged victorious in the national tournament, culminating in a monumental win against St Joseph in Upolu.

Their journey home to Savai'i was met with a jubilant reception as hundreds gathered at the Samoa Shipping Corporation (S.S.C) domestic terminal in Salelologa, bedecked in banners and exuberant cheers.

The scene was a tapestry of emotions, as tears of joy mingled with expressions of pride and admiration. Mothers clutched their babies close, their hearts swelling with pride for the valiant efforts of their loved ones. The atmosphere was electric, with dancing, singing, and heartfelt embraces painting the landscape of celebration.

From the wharf to the Salelologa market, and through the villages of Fa'asaleleaga No.1 to Fa'asaleleaga No.5, the team paraded amidst a sea of supporters. Front yards were adorned with balloons and banners, while throngs of onlookers lined the streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the triumphant athletes.

Amidst the festivities, elders of the villages paused the procession to bestow gifts upon the players, a gesture of profound respect and admiration for their remarkable achievements. Women took to the streets, their rhythmic dances accompanied by the clangor of cooking pots and utensils, a testament to the pride and joy that permeated the air.

In Saipipi, the home of Amoa College, preparations were underway to honor the returning heroes. The paramount Chief, Tutuaitu Samuelu, conveyed the village's gratitude to the players, coaches, and school officials for their unwavering dedication. Despite facing challenges such as limited resources and smaller physical stature compared to their counterparts in Upolu, the Amoa College team defied the odds, emerging victorious on both fronts.

Vice Principal Letufuga Oeni Maseuli expressed heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of support and prayers from the village elders, underscoring the unity and strength of the community in rallying behind their young champions.

As the celebrations unfolded, people of all ages and backgrounds united in a chorus of jubilation, reaffirming the enduring spirit of resilience and camaraderie that defines the essence of sport in Savai'i.
