Three people were taken to hospital after a violent altercation on the highway in Pesega in the late afternoon on Saturday, as confirmed by the Police Commissioner in response to queries from the Samoa Observer.

According to Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, the three injured men, who were intoxicated, were employees of a local hotel.

He said they were returning home from work when the incident occurred. Initial statements gathered by the police suggest that the altercation began when the men began swearing at other vehicles, resulting in a confrontation.

The alleged perpetrators of the assault are believed to be members of a volleyball team who were traveling alongside the vehicle occupied by the three victims. The unfortunate incident was captured on video by bystanders and quickly circulated on social media platforms.

The incident unfolded amidst heavy traffic, with cars passing by as the assault took place. Shockingly, no bystanders intervened to halt the violence.

The Police Commissioner confirmed that the three injured men had been discharged from the hospital and had provided statements to the authorities.

While no arrests have been made yet, the police have identified individuals allegedly involved in the assault and intend to bring them in for questioning on Monday.

Taking the opportunity to address the public, especially those who consume alcohol, the Police Commissioner urged individuals to avoid conflict in public spaces and to refrain from excessive drinking.

He emphasised that public safety remains a top priority, and individuals engaging in violence or using abusive language in public places will be apprehended without hesitation.

He added that it was lucky that no one was injured in a manner that could have been fatal. He said similar incidents have resulted in deaths and people have ended up behind bars.

The video of the incident showed the alleged perpetrators kicking the three victims even when they were motionless.
