The newly appointed chief executive officer for the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development was awarded the prestigious 2024 Stepan Kerkyasharian AO Community Harmony Medal by the New South Wales Government in Australia.

Loau Donina Va'a was recognised and honoured for her outstanding contributions to fostering social cohesion and understanding among diverse cultural and faith communities in New South Wales (NSW).

The esteemed award acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and achievement in promoting harmony and acceptance across different cultural and religious groups within the state.

Over the past two decades, Loau has dedicated herself to building trust and fostering dialogue among leaders from various Pacific nations and government bodies.

Her efforts have played a pivotal role in promoting cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

Loau's extensive involvement in numerous community-based initiatives and organisations underscores her commitment to advancing social cohesion and inclusivity.

She has served on the Board of the N.S.W Council for Pacific Communities and actively contributed to committees addressing homelessness, domestic violence, and multiculturalism.

Notably, her leadership within the Core Pacific Collective proved instrumental in facilitating culturally appropriate responses to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her advocacy efforts, including the creation of the COVID-19 Hope Tool Kit translated into multiple Pacific languages, exemplify her dedication to equitable solutions and community empowerment.

Throughout her career, Loau has championed the rights and voices of marginalized groups, particularly women, through initiatives such as the Pacific Women’s Network in Australia and the 'Linking Hearts Multicultural Service' at Muslim Women Australia.

Her tireless advocacy has been recognised with accolades such as the Lead Practitioner Specialist Homelessness Service Award in 2020.

Loau's impact extends beyond Australia's borders, with her instrumental role in organising international conferences and initiatives aimed at advancing early childhood development and empowering Pacific communities.

In January of this year, Cabinet appointed Loau to lead M.W.C.S.D., with her tenure set to commence this month.
