Man charged for causing death
A 40-year-old man is now in police custody following his arrest and charged with negligent driving causing death to a 54-year-old man at Siusega.
Deputy Police Commissioner, Papalii Monalisa Tiai-Keti confirmed to this newspaper in an interview on Monday that the incident took place last weekend and the police have found and charged the driver.
"It happened in Siusega and the 54-year-old man is confirmed dead so the driver was arrested and charged on that same night," she said.
"He has been charged for negligent driving causing death to the 54-year-old man."
The police are now continuing their investigations into this matter and will soon confirm the accused's court appearance.
It is believed that 54-year-old man was walking on the side of the road on Saturday evening when he was hit by a vehicle driven by the accused.
The police located the driver with the help of people around the area who had seen the vehicle.
Police are urging members of the public, especially pedestrians to be careful when walking at night, especially in areas where there are no footpaths. Police have called on drivers to keep speed to a minimum in areas where people are moving around.
Meanwhile, Papali'i also confirmed that a 26-year-old man from the village of Paia in the Gagaifomauga district of Savaii was found dead in his home last Saturday night.
Papalii said the young man is alleged to have died of a gunshot wound and although the injury could have been self-inflicted, the police were treating this as a homicide.
