Choppy seas and bad weather conditions cancelled inter-island travel between Savaii and Upolu on Friday, with forecasts not looking promising for the rest of the week.

The Samoa Shipping Corporation Limited issued a statement on Facebook on Friday morning announcing the cancellation of the Upolu-Savai'i trips.

“Be informed that due to rough sea and bad weather conditions, we are cancelling all sailing today,” the Samoa Shipping Corporation Limited stated.

"We thank you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this might cause but safety is paramount in our services."

The statement from the Samoa Shipping Corporation Limited warns the public to be aware of the cancellation of inter-island travel owing to inclement weather, and that an update would be provided in due course.

The Samoa Meteorology office on Friday morning advised members of the public to watch out for heavy downpours with poor visibility, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, and pooling near roadsides and waterways.

The advisory was issued in a Public and Marine Severe Weather Information which stated that the active convergence zone associated with a broad convective cloud band remains within the vicinity of Samoa.

“Heavy downpours with poor visibility, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, pooling near roadsides and waterways—fresh and gusty winds at times, rough seas, and strong currents over marine waters,” stated the weather report.

“Therefore, Marine Warning remains in force for all Northern seas while Marine Advisory is now in effect for Southern marine waters.
