Seasonal workers parties concerns chief

A Samoan chief on seasonal work and his family are calling on the government to closely supervise the policies of seasonal work schemes which are believed to have been breached by the workers.
He has made the call after several failed attempts to stop parties where Samoan women would drink in the men's dormitory and even end up spending the night there.
He said his concern is the married workers as these are the things that lead to many Samoan men and women leaving their spouses.
The man works at a farm in Queensland, Australia and he wrote to the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour last month informing the Ministry that the policies are being breached by the Samoan workers in Australia.
In the letter, he wrote that the Samoan female workers have constantly been drinking at the men's dorms despite several warnings from the liaison officer in Australia namely Ron Hellesoe.
"I wish to inform your office of the challenges that continue to happen within our team here in Australia regarding the female workers continuing to drink here at the men's dorm," he stated in the letter.
"On the 15th of November, I first caught some women workers inside the men's rooms where we sleep and eat, so I informed the female leader named Selepa and asked her why the girls were continuing to overstep into the men's dorms.
"She then advised them because of us married men and how our wives would see this however, this did not stop them as they had another drink-up on the same week after they were told by the team leader."
Toimoana also explained that there was a fight between men that occurred from one of the drink-ups with the female workers.
He also stressed that before their departure, they were informed by their team leaders and the M.C.I.L as well as liaison officer about the alcohol policy and the circumstances of breaching the policy.
Since the letter was obtained by the Samoa Observer, attempts to get a comment from the Ministry of Finance as well as the Minister, Lautimuia Afoa Uelese who is now looking after the seasonal work program were not successful.
Meanwhile, Samoa Observer understands that the Minister of Public Enterprises, Leatinuu Wayne Sooialo who had the seasonal work scheme under his ministerial portfolio stressed in a previous interview that one of the reasons why the policy was reviewed was to overcome challenges that broke families apart due to seasonal working opportunities.
