Despite the many accolades, and records this year, earning medals at the Olympic Games 2024 is the Samoa weightlifting team's ultimate goal, and national coach, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork is now looking at the future of the sport in the country starting with owning their facility.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Tuaopepe said he sees a lot of good talents and aspiring lifters in the country but there's a lot to be done.

For starters, they are hoping to obtain the ownership of the current government facility they're currently training and camping in.

"A lot of talent in the country which I can't say that I'll be around to take it through but I'll do my best. Our goal right now is the Olympic  Games gold medal," he said.

"It's the ultimate of all and if we can reach that, then there's nothing else that's higher and also become the powerhouse of weightlifting which is very hard because right a lot of countries are still cheating.

"Using a lot of drugs, bad substances, so it's an unfair playfield which we have to go against and some of the superpowers are pumping millions into their efforts while we are struggling to just get money to provide them food daily.

"But the talent is there, the school programs which is going to start again next year and we're looking at more kids coming through so I hope and pray that the government will give us that safe facility so it can belong to the Samoa Weightlifting. This way we can develop the sport.

"So, that it can also move up to another level. Not only take over the junior level, the youth level, but also go to the senior level and that is the aim right now and the near future."

Samoa's champion lifters recently won the most gold medals for Samoa from the XVII Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands returning home with 18 gold medals out of 35 gold the Samoan athletes won overall.

Samoa's weightlifters have also broken Commonwealth records this year. Also, Samoa hosted the elite training camp this year showing that if Samoa Weightlifting can own the facility, there is a chance they can help the nation through sports tourism.
