The three accused who are alleged to have brought into Samoa the largest consignment of methamphetamine yet appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday for mention.

Roderick Mackenzie, Peter Hanipale Malae and Jacinta Selafi Chang-Kwan fronted the court.

Malae appeared unrepresented and was told by Judge Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma to seek legal counsel. Mackenzie was represented by Leone Su'a-Mailo and Chung-Kwan was by Afa Lesa.

Prosecutor Maiavatele Timothy Fesili requested the court for an adjournment of two weeks for the prosecution to finalise charges. Justice  Roma granted the application.

The three accused were granted bail with the condition they surrender all their travel documents to the registrar.

Mackenzie was told to live at Lotopa while Chung-Kwan at Toamua and Malae is to live at Fasito'o-Tai. They are not to change their residence.

They were ordered to sign in at the Apia Police Station every Tuesday and Friday and not to re-offend.

Justice Roma adjourned the matter to 24 February. The three accused are yet to take a plea.

The police on 30 January seized more than $4 million worth of crystal methamphetamine at the wharf in a container belonging to a supermarket in Lotopa. This was seen as a major victory in Samoa's ongoing battle against drug trafficking.

The meth was discovered concealed inside packets of Lifesaver candies and had come on a ship which had made port in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Police Commissioner, Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo in a recent interview with Samoa Observer revealed that the businessman had been on the police's radar for some time before the bust.
