A renewable energy company called Green Energy Holdings Ltd-Samoa (GEH) is hoping to set up wind farms in Samoa and contribute to the nation’s transition to 100 per cent clean energy.

The company conducted a community awareness consultation regarding a renewable wind energy project proposal for Samoa on Saturday 16 December at Taumeasina Island Resort.

The community awareness consultation was part of the PUMA Development Consent Application procedure in the overall mandatory due process that Green Energy Holdings Ltd-Samoa is diligently following.

“Green Energy Holdings Ltd-Samoa highly hopes that upon satisfying all compulsory requirements set by the evaluating Government body, it would enable GEH to provide cost-effective, sustainable, and clean energy for Samoa aligning with our national mandate to transition away from fossil fuels and combat climate change,” said the company in a statement.

“The consultation included a diversity of participants with a general and vested interest in the renewable wind energy project development.

“The awareness consultation included a brief project description, national benefits of the renewable wind energy project, environmental impact and mitigating measures, feedback, and concerns from the participants to be addressed during the environment management planning.”

GEH self-funded their Project Lead Tuala Johnwilliam Sala as a private sector participant in the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 – COP28 in Dubai with great appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in assisting GEH’s representative to be an observer for the Samoan Delegation.

“Tuala experienced first-hand the Samoan delegation’s great efforts to fight climate change, advocate for immediate actions against global warming, and negotiate tirelessly for decisions that align with staying under 1.5 degrees of warming to mention a few,” said the company.

“Tuala witnessed global initiatives such as the “Tripling Renewable Energy and Double Energy Efficiency by 2030” pledge agreed upon by 118 countries worldwide with the European Union, United States, and UAE leading the target supported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).”

“Tuala met the European Investment Bank Vice President Ambroise Fayolle who shared that with the Samoa Agreement signed in Apia, November 2023 between the European Union and African, Caribbean, and Pacific Islands States; the bilateral relations between the EU and signatory states administers the European Union’s commitment of various green financial assistance including Just Transition and Just Resilience opportunities.”

Vice President Fayolle also shared that the EIB has an investment division indicating that subject to checks on GEH’s Wind Energy Proposal for Samoa such as proof of technology, sustainability, and financial feasibility study, EIB can participate as an investor to share the financial responsibility with the aligned investors already on board.

Green Energy Holdings Ltd-Samoa would like to invite local Government financial institutions such as UTOS/SNPF for interest to participate as investors to allow a localised involvement and collective ownership of such a unique clean energy project. I

“Heeding our Government Leader’s call to action against climate change, Green Energy Holdings Ltd-Samoa remains hopeful to play its part in our national mandate to transition away from fossil fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions subject to due process and guidelines set by our government,” stated the company.
