Faynihanthia is N.U.S.' top journalist
The end of one chapter is just the beginning of another for Faynihanthia Fereti, who was named the 2023 Top Media and Journalism student at the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) T.V.E.T. graduation on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old from Apia and Vaiala was overwhelmed with excitement all while also feeling relieved to have accomplished this.
She is the daughter of Muliagatele Lima Fereti and Tali Loau-Fereti.
Ms. Fereti said her journey at N.U.S. was "engaging".
She attributed her success to her aunty Dorian Moe-Vineula in Hawai'i whom she said has been her inspiration in everything she does in life.
"But I also dedicate this to my parents and family who have been supporting me throughout this journey," Ms. Fereti told this newspaper.
Now armed with a Diploma in Media and Journalism, Ms. Fereti is hoping to gain work experience at the Samoa Observer while awaiting for approval to commence her studies at the Brigham Young University (B.Y.U.) in Hawai'i.
She hopes to pursue a Bachelor in Communication, Media and Culture before returning to Samoa.
Ms. Fereti was also given the honours of speaking on behalf of the hundreds of graduates at N.U.S. on Wednesday to thank the university, their families and friends for the support throughout this academic year.
She began her remarks by citing Proverbs 9 verses 10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
"First and foremost, I give thanks and praise to our Heavenly Father for without him I would not be standing before you this morning. Today, my fellow classmates and I honour you Lord, for allowing us this wonderful achievement in our educational journeys.
"We were able to overcome the challenges and hardships that we encountered over the past two years because of your faithfulness and unfailing love. The glory belongs to you Lord for without you we would not be able to accomplish anything.
"Secondly, I want to thank the University and especially our lecturers and teachers who have guided us along our academic journeys this year. Thank you for imparting your knowledge and experience to ensure that we, the students are well prepared for employment opportunities out there in the real world.
"To all our parents, thank you for your support and commitment, in ensuring that whatever we needed and whenever we needed it for our education was provided. We especially thank you for the countless sacrifices you have made to ensure that we receive your continued support during our studies.
"To all the parents here today, I know and have seen how overwhelming it can get when household funds and resources are low while many things at home all land at once; like personal, family, cultural and church obligations and not to mention our educational and everyday household needs. Hence, not all days were smooth and bright with rainbows throughout the year because there are always difficult and trying days but none of that stopped you our parents from keeping on.
"Your faith in God through your prayers have helped and carried us through this year. We acknowledge, appreciate and love you all and please know that not a single thing goes unnoticed! I also want to thank our spiritual parents, we thank you for your endless prayers and support. We count ourselves lucky for we have some faithful prayer warriors devoting themselves to our pastoral care and spiritual wellbeing.
"At the start of my journey I used to get distracted easily and it was hard focusing. There were days that I felt like giving up and throwing everything away. The struggle was real. But I found refuge in a hymn that has become my fight song. It reminded me about my kuleana -a Hawaiian word for responsibility.
"I had a selfish mindset because I am so used to getting my way, therefore I neglected my responsibility to my family, my main support system and driving force. Of course, the hardships and struggles added on, but they were manageable, and I overcame the obstacles during my journey."
"My dear graduating class of 2023, the ending of this chapter unfolds a whole new beginning, never ever cease to see the faithful hand of our Lord not only in our academic journeys but in our daily lives."
